Corrie: Abi Franklin faces shock baby in trailer

It’s been four years since Sally Carman joined the cast of Coronation Street as mechanic Abi Franklin – and she’s made a big impression on soap opera viewers.

The character was introduced as the mother of teenager Seb Franklin – played by 22-year-old Harry Visinoni, but Sally has become an important part of the show in her own right.

The actress wowed viewers and critics alike by being at the heart of a number of gripping stories, including the hate crime that saw her son Seb and girlfriend Nina Lucas – played by Mollie Gallagher, 24 – attacked by a group of teenagers.

And while viewers are used to seeing Sally, 40, on the show every week, they probably don’t know much about her off-screen life.

Education

Sally grew up in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, raised by her parents Steve and Ann Carman, a miner and nursing home worker respectively.

She described her mum as ‘beautiful inside and out’ in a social media post last year, calling her dad an ‘anchor’ and a ‘hero’.

During her childhood, the family is said to have watched Coronation Street religiously – which gave her the ambition to one day work on the ITV soap opera herself.

She then pursued a career in acting and after some trouble with poor attendance at a performing arts college, she got a place at the prestigious LAMDA acting school.

Career

Sally made her TV debut in the crime procedural drama City Central in 1998. She went on to land roles in long-running shows including Doctors, Heartbeat and Holby City.

Her big break, however, came as prostitute Kelly Maguire in Shameless. The character was introduced in 2005 and remained on the show until its final season in 2013.

The character’s storylines in the Channel 4 series included tension with her future husband’s family early in the relationship and later a phantom pregnancy.

The role saw Sally take part in several steamy sex scenes while starring in the comedy drama series, including with on-screen husband Nicky Evans, 42 – who played Shane Maguire.

It was in 2017 that she made her screen debut in Coronation Street, with her character Abi initially introduced as a drug addict and Seb’s estranged mother.

Abi then got clean and worked on her relationship with her son – before she died. She is currently married to Kevin Webster, played by 57-year-old Michael Le Vell.

Their relationship was rocked recently, however, when he found out about a one-night stand she was having behind her back. She has since given birth to a baby boy, named Alfie.

Abi hasn’t realized she’s pregnant and has yet to reveal to her ex Kevin that the father is actually Imran Habeeb, played by 31-year-old Charlie de Melo.

Romance

While her character may be in the middle of a romantically complicated situation, the same can’t be said for off-screen Sally – who is in a relationship with 51-year-old Joe Duttine.

He plays Tim Metcalfe on the ITV soap opera and, interestingly, the pair appeared on Shameless – with him having played Cameron Donnelly in the comedy-drama series.

The couple started dating in 2018 and moved in together the following year. They got engaged in 2020 and plan to tie the knot around Christmas this year.

Discussing their relationship last year, Sally teased what it’s like to work with her fiancé on the set of Coronation Street. She commented, “I hate working with him.”

The actor explained, “He’s a rotten man to work with because he makes me laugh to the point where I get this sweaty feeling because I can’t grasp.”

Sally and Joe – who has two children from a previous relationship – moved in together almost three years ago after she showed off parts of their home on social media.

She posted a photo of their dining room on Instagram last year, which showed a table set with tealights and a candle. Elsewhere in the room were a wardrobe and two chairs.

The actor gave a glimpse inside a living room most recently on the platform, when she thanked an artist for his “beautiful” oil paintings. The photo centered on a chair.

And she already featured the couple’s bathroom a few months ago when she thanked a cleaning company. The photo showed an old fashioned shiny bathtub.

Religion

Sally previously revealed that she found her faith later in life, after being baptized at St Philip’s Church in Salford in 2019. It is there that she plans to marry.

The soap opera star said she became a Christian around seven years ago after a friend ‘shared something’ with her – with religion then suddenly taking ‘meaning to another level’.

Coronation Street continues Monday nights from 8 p.m. on ITV. You can catch up via the ITV hub.
