West Lothian politician ‘scared for her life’ after spotting giant spider
A West Lothian politician has been ‘scared for her life’ after spotting a huge monster-like spider in her garden.
SNP MP Hannah Bardell discovered the giant house spider while enjoying a cup of tea in the sunshine in Livingston on Sunday.
House spiders are rare at this time of year, but the British Arachnological Society has warned mating season may have arrived early due to milder winter weather.

The 38-year-old shared the image on Twitter, writing, “Minding my business having a cup of tea in my garden (under some gutters ok) and it’s now falling on my arm !
“Biggest spider I’ve ever seen in or around my garden or house – I don’t know what it is, but my irrational fear of spiders may have kicked it up a notch.”
Talk to Edinburgh Live, the MP for Livingston added: “I had the scare of my life but I’m pretty used to spotting them, I live in an old flat but I went to the toilet the other night and a giant spider was hanging right there on the floor in front of the toilet, so I had to take it home.

“I have to say I was surprised to see such a big one so soon and wondered what it was. Very interested in the science on this as it could well be another signal that the nature is responding to climate change and is yet another reminder of how important the fight against climate change is.”
She later concluded that the creature was most likely a “particularly meaty house spider”.
